Adaptation and Sustainability: Local Communities’ Responses to Climate Change in Coastal Areas
Main Article Content
Abstract
The field of climate change adaptation in Southeast Asian coastal regions has garnered significant attention due to the increasing vulnerability of local communities to environmental disruptions. Specifically, in coastal areas, the impact of climate change has led to the need for adaptive strategies that integrate both ecological and social dimensions. However, limited research has explored the subjective experiences and perceptions of local communities in these areas, leaving a gap in understanding how they engage with and adapt to these challenges. This study addresses this gap by using a phenomenological approach to examine the lived experiences of coastal community members facing climate change impacts. Through in-depth interviews with fishermen, farmers, and local leaders, we identified key adaptation strategies, such as innovative practices like mangrove restoration projects designed to simultaneously combat erosion and enhance biodiversity, alongside sustainable farming techniques tailored to local conditions, as central to their resilience efforts. The findings suggest that local knowledge and community collaboration are critical factors in successful adaptation. These insights contribute to a more nuanced understanding of climate change adaptation, emphasizing the importance of community-based approaches in future climate policy development.
