Patient Experiences and Trust in Pharmacogenomic Communication for Personalized Medicine

Abstract
This study explores how patients understand and interpret physician-delivered pharmacogenomic information during therapeutic decision-making. Using an interpretive phenomenological approach, data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews with patients who had undergone pharmacogenomic testing and analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. The findings show that patients experience pharmacogenomic communication as a relational process shaped by trust in physicians, emotional responses, contextual interpretation, and partial comprehension of genomic information. Rather than relying on complete scientific understanding, patients’ acceptance of treatment emerges from the personal meaning they assign to pharmacogenomic information within their lived experiences. These findings highlight the importance of patient-centered communication in pharmacogenomic implementation and contribute to a more holistic understanding of personalized medicine by emphasizing the experiential dimensions of genomic care.
