Prisoners' Experiences in the Rehabilitation Process within Indonesian Correctional Institutions: Social Dynamics, Legal Challenges, and Policy Reform Implications
Main Article Content
Abstract
The Indonesian criminal justice system faces challenges in effectively rehabilitating prisoners due to inadequate facilities, social stigma, and punitive legal policies. This study explores the subjective experiences of prisoners undergoing rehabilitation in Indonesian correctional institutions. Using a phenomenological approach, in-depth interviews and participant observation were conducted with 20 prisoners from diverse backgrounds. Findings reveal that prisoners experience social isolation, inadequate skill development programs, and perceive existing legal policies as more punitive than rehabilitative. They also express a desire for legal reforms that are more humane and supportive of their reintegration into society. This study contributes to the understanding of prisoners' experiences in Indonesia and provides insights for policy reforms to create a more effective and humane rehabilitation system.
